There are various kinds of computer driver downloads available from manufacturers for various operating system. You can download the drivers from many of the free sites that are available as well as from the site of the manufacturers for the drivers.

Video Card driver

These drivers are meant for the video card. For example the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) is for the video card drivers that use the Windows Vista platform. They are better than the previous versions of video card drivers as they provide Virtualized video memory, GPU interruptibilty and cross process sharing of Direct 3D surfaces.

Network and modem drivers

There are internal and external modems for computers and laptops. There are a number of companies that also manufacturer many types of modems. Modem and network drivers need to be compatible with a particular driver. The manufacturers that provide both the network, modem and the drivers are 3Com/US Robotics, Supra Modems, Aprotech, Directron, Genica, Lucent, SiS & Zoom.

Operating system patches and the drivers are also available for downloads

Most corporations and people have now switched over to the Windows Vista or 2000 operating systems. However there are still few people who still have the Windows 95, 98 operating systems. There are still patches and drivers that are available.

Windows 2000Service pack 2; Windows 2000 AGP bug fix for AMD is also available. Windows provides patches on its sites for upgrading everyday for its operating systems. Most of them are paid downloads.

Storage device drivers

These are important especially when the storage devices aren’t working properly. One of the benefits of buying a licensed product is getting the original drivers along with the product. When a driver is blown, its easy to install it back, else if you buy a pirated product or unlicensed product, it can become difficult to get a driver that can be installed properly.

Floppy disk drive is rarely sued, but there are drivers still available for them. With external disk drives, USB drives gaining popularity, drives aren’t required for them. In fact most of them are plug and play devices that can be used instantly to store the data.

There are many drivers that are available as diagnostic tools for hard disk drives installed inside the servers and the computers.

Monitor drivers

Currently Windows based systems provide plug and play monitors. However the older systems using old video or monitor combinations may still require monitor drivers. Many of the touch screen devices also require monitor drivers.

Motherboard and chipset drivers

Usually the drivers are provided by the manufacturers. In case you don’t find the driver you can still look for them on the internet. Many of them are free downloads but you may have to pay for some. Some of the motherboard for which downloads are available are Via, AMD, Epox etc.

It’s important to install the right driver without which the device would be rendered useless.
