A lot to know about CD Rom drivers
ATAPI compliant drivers
There are plenty of CDROM drivers that are available from the manufacturer. However you need to check from the manufacturer or from the third party vendors. Windows platform normally have built in CDROM drivers especially for the ATAPI compliant ones. These are generic CDROM drivers. Anyways if the user does have ATAPI driver then it doesn’t need a CDROM driver for Windows.
Some common problems and their solutions when the drives aren’t functional
If after installing CDROM drivers, your drive still isn’t working, then there may be a fault with the device. With inexpensive CD and DVD drives available easily, it doesn’t cost much to replace the drive. If the system still doesn’t work, some power cable may be loose. You can open the system but do so at your own risk.
Sometimes there can be BIOS misconfiguration if the CDROM drivers aren’t getting installed properly. Most manufacturers provide a single CDROM driver for the device. In case it doesn’t work, then the user can install another CDROM driver of the same manufacturer. Sometimes this does the trick. You may not get all the functionalities but in most cases, it’s enough to make device work.
Many new manufacturers of CD-ROMs may not have their websites. In that case downloading the CDROM drivers can become difficult. But if you have windows XP installed, you can go to Windows catalog to check whether they have provided the CDROM drivers for the device. The list is updated weekly.
SCSI
If you have a SCSI CD-ROM drive, then you need a driver for the SCSI interface and not the drive. If you only have a CD recorder, then you can’t write on the CD. For that you would need CD burning software such as Nero to write. In this case CDROM drivers aren’t required.
Firmware
Firmware work in conjunction with the CDROM drivers and is installed in the memory of the CD-ROM. Only if you are experiencing any problems should you upgrade the firmware of the CD-ROM. Read the instructions for downloading carefully, before you install the same. While there are many generic ATAPI CDROM drivers that are available, there are hardly any generic firmware that’s available for CD-ROMs.
Various sites offering the CDROM drivers
There are many sites that offer that offer CDROM drivers for all platforms. It’s easy to get the generic CDROM drivers for most of the common manufacturers. Some of the sites have paid memberships and allow users to upload drivers that are had to find especially for the old systems.
The manufacturers of the CD-ROMs also provide the CDROM drivers where the users can download. Updates and new firmware is also provided on these sites. Download the CDROM drivers that work with your device after reading the installation instructions carefully.
